What is avascular necrosis?
Avascular necrosis is also known as osteonecrosis, aseptic necrosis, and ischemic bone necrosis. Avascular necrosis is a disease that occurs when there has been a loss of blood supply to the bones, temporary or permanent. Without blood, the bone cannot receive any oxygen and dies. This causes the bones to collapse. Avascular necrosis most commonly affects the joints in the knee, hip, and shoulder.
Avascular necrosis occurs most commonly in people between 30 and 50 years old. Ten thousand to twenty thousand people develop avascular necrosis in the United States alone.
Avascular necrosis is the reason for approximately one-tenth of all hip replacements.
What causes avascular necrosis?
- Alcoholism
- Excessive steroid use
- Trauma
- Caisson disease
- Vascular compression
- Hypertension
- Vasculitis
- Thrombosis
- Damage caused by radiation
- Sickle cell anemia
What are the symptoms of avascular necrosis?
In its early stages, avascular necrosis is hard to detect. Often, there aren’t any symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, patients find themselves in pain. At first, the pain is mild, but if the disease is left untreated, the pain can become extremely debilitating.
What is the treatment for avascular necrosis?
The treatment for avascular necrosis is aimed at stopping the spread of this disease and reducing the pain it causes.
The available treatments for avascular necrosis are:
- Limiting use and movement of the affected joints and bones
- Drug therapy
- Surgery
The chances of successful treatment for avascular necrosis greatly increase with early diagnosis. This is why it is so important for doctors to recognize the signs of avascular necrosis. If they fail to order the proper testing, avascular necrosis may go untreated for too long, resulting in treatment being mildly, if at all, effective.
