Treatment of CRPS/RSD

CRPS/RSD is generally treated by a physiatrist or neurologist that specializes in neuromuscular disorders.  Treatment is aimed to restore function and decrease symptoms.  The following treatments maybe pursued to help patients:

  1. PT/OT-for restoring physical function of the affected limbs
  2. Medications like antidepressants, NSAID’s, steroids, gabapentin, pregablin-these medications help lessen anxiety, decrease nerve excitability and allow patients to effectively work on restoring function
  3. Osteoporosis medications like bisphosphonates to slow the progression of the bone destruction
  4. Anesthetic blocks, neurostimulators, sympathectomy all help to decrease nerve excitability and decrease pain sensations
  5. Other-psychotherapy, biofeedback, hypnosis, relaxation techniques to help patients manage the pain and anxiety
  6. Lastly, opioids.  Narcotic pain medications generally do not help patients with CRPS/RSD.
